Self-Advocates

Community Living Society supports many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These individuals are a diverse group of people. They come from all different areas of the lower mainland.

Some individuals speak out about the needs of others. They speak out about issues that are unjust or of concern to people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. These individuals call themselves self-advocates. They want to
• Advance the rights of people with disabilities
• Bring about understanding of the public
• Respond to the issues that individuals say are important to them.

Self-advocates are committed to sharing ideas and taking action about what makes people’s lives better. They provide feedback to affect individuals’ lives. They want to make changes in society, government and organizations.

Self-advocates believe in inclusion, community, communication, honesty and being treated with respect.

CLS has a Self-Advocates Committee. It reports to the leadership team. The committee works on things that are important to the everyday lives of supported individuals.
